Event merch programs in San Diego

Convention weeks reward scarcity, the coast sells layers after sunset, and the brewery belt asks for glassware instead of apparel.

San Diego is the third of our no-travel-fee markets and the one with the widest spread of program types inside a single county. In one month the briefs can run from a convention-week activation aimed at an international badge crowd, to a cliffside wedding for ninety people, to a brewery anniversary where the merchandise is glassware rather than clothing. They share a city and very little else, so the useful first question here is not what you want made — it is which San Diego market you are actually operating in.

Convention weeks and Gaslamp offsites

When a major show takes over the waterfront, the Gaslamp Quarter becomes a wall of offsite activations competing for the same badge holders, and merchandise is one of the few reliable reasons someone leaves one venue for another. Scarcity is what performs: one piece per day, released in small numbers at an announced time, rather than a pallet handed out at the door. Gaslamp venues are old hotels and converted buildings with narrow docks and almost no back-of-house, so the program has to fit behind a bar rather than in a storeroom, and it has to be replenished daily.

The coast, and what happens after sunset

Coronado, La Jolla, Del Mar and the North County beaches produce one planning fact worth more than any other: outdoor events cool quickly once the sun drops, and a light layer becomes the most wanted item of the night within about half an hour. Programs on the coast should be weighted toward outerwear rather than assuming a tee is what people want at nine at night. Salt air and damp also favor embroidery and applied patches over anything decorated fresh on the day. The wedding program page covers the small-run side of this in full.

Biotech campuses and the brewery belt

The Sorrento Valley and UTC research corridor runs corporate programs with known headcounts, strict brand governance and a preference for quality over quantity — closer to the Bay Area pattern than to anything else in the county. The brewery belt through Miramar, Vista and Carlsbad is the opposite case entirely: anniversary and release events where the merchandise is drinkware, hard goods and caps, decorated with UV DTF and embroidery rather than printed on garments. When apparel is wanted at all, full-color label artwork translates cleanly to DTF.

Getting the San Diego quote

Travel is zero — San Diego sits inside the no-fee area alongside Orange County and Los Angeles — and the local event minimum is $3,000 rather than the $4,500 that applies in travel markets. Staffing is $250 an hour for the first station and $125 an hour for each additional one, setup and teardown included. Because the drive down is short, we can also split a crew across a morning and an evening event on the same date, which is worth asking about if your program covers a conference day and a dinner. Send the date, venue and headcount through the work order.
